Funchal is as chilled out as capital cities get. It’s probs all the Madeira vino. Wander the sun-smashed streets, shop in traditional craft stalls, take on craggy cliff top hikes, and chow down on a fried fish sarnie in one of the botanical gardens.

Where will I sleep?

Four Views Monumental… it’s like this hotel got its name from a stunned traveller. And they had reason to be. This modern gaff is nestled in Funchal’s bustling Lido area, surrounded by restaurants and just a short stroll from the sea.

Inside, there’s a cocktail bar, a restaurant, and a grab & go station for lunches, but the al fresco pool bar is the real MVP. Grab a seat up here for a panorama of pool, sea, and mountain. Mornings are made for free breakfasts and trips to the Acqua Senses Circuit in the spa for a climatised indoor pool, Roman baths, and a sauna. There’s also a gym, games room with table tennis, and a reading room for moments of zen.

Our fave spot? Head to the sun terrace to watch a fireball sunset whilst drinking a (you guessed it) fireball.

What will I do?

It’s a four-minute walk to Complexo Balnear do Lido, a cluster of sundecks and saltwater tidal pools. Prefer your ocean dips to be free? Head down the coast towards Praia do Gorgulho for the free swimming area. When you’ve got tired of doing your lobster impression on the beach, check out Freeride. These guys do mountain bike tours of the island.

For eats, we like Boutique Lido for morning coffees, La Vaca Negra for huge steaks and bottles of red, and Avista for artsy eats with insane views.

The city centre itself is 15 minutes by bus, a five-minute cab ride, or a half an hour's walk. Go for Madeira wine cellars, ornate cathedrals, and subtropical gardens.
